Leadership is a key part of all different types of organizations, from social change to governmental organizations. It contributes to the direction and longevity of the organizations, the functioning of its members and the overall purpose (mission and vision). Any living life form depends on vital organs and limbs; however, there is the need of leadership in order to coordinate the functioning (i.e. the brain) of these extremities and collaborate working together. Leadership is extremely important to me and developing that skill will enhance my ability to make changes as a director in one of the 21 Regional Centers or as a vital member of the Department of Developmental Disability in California. My target audiences are current local Non-Governmental Organizations and Social Change Organizations who are finding themselves’ struggling with staff retention, low morale, and effectiveness in the community due to high turnover and compassion fatigue. With this website I hope to answer the following question through exploration of what is considered leadership, types of leaders and models that appeared to be the best options from my research.
“What are the key elements in developing adequate and collaborative leadership within social change organizations to maximize overall sustainability?”
“What are the key elements in developing adequate and collaborative leadership within social change organizations to maximize overall sustainability?”
Leadership is:
• the art of mobilizing others
• the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because s/he wants to do it • getting things done through other people, willingly (Hailey, p.1, 2006). Leaders are:• empower others
• leverage more than their own capability • articulate visions, embody values and create an environment within which things can be achieved • shape and share a vision which gives point to the work of others • are best when they barely know that s/he exists • with the best of leaders, when the work is done, the project completed, the people will say “we did it ourselves” (Hailey, p.1, 2006). |
